What Is Going On?

IN EFFECT 07/01/2020

SENATE BILL 1414

HB 777

Capturing, keeping, possessing, transporting, or exhibiting venomous reptiles, reptiles of concern, conditional reptiles, or prohibited reptiles; license required.

A person, party, firm, association, or corporation may not keep, possess, import into the state, sell, barter, trade, or breed the following species except for educational or research purposes:

-Burmese or Indian python

-Reticulated python

-Northern African python

-Southern African python

-Amethystine or scrub python

-Green Anaconda

-Nile monitor

-Green iguana

-Tegu lizard

-Any other reptile designated as a conditional or prohibited species by the commission.

Current licensed, inspected, and law abiding citizens would no longer be able to continue their business.  Essentially, the current permit available allowing you to keep, breed, and sell Conditional out of state or to other permit holders would be gone. This is an effort to end ownership of all Conditional species in Florida. And not just currently listed species, but any listed in the future, too. (USARK)

Mobile educators without a facility open to the public, breeders in the state of Florida, and dealers in the state of Florida would no longer be able to do such activities.

IN EFFECT 07/01/2020

SENATE BILL 906

The commission shall establish by rule a method and process for the capture, purchase, inventory, and sale of all green iguanas and black and white tegus.

If the commission designates a species of reptile as a conditional or prohibited species after July 1, 2010, the commission may authorize the personal possession of that newly designated species by those licensed to possess that species of reptile before the effective date of the species’ designation by the commission as a conditional or prohibited species. Personal possession of such reptile is not a violation if the personal possession was authorized by the commission.

Current pet holders would be grandfathered in and able to own their current pet animals for the entirety of their life. Once those animals pass and during their lifetime you would no longer be able to purchase or own any other Ig. Iguana or Tegu species.

Amendments as of 02/12/20 also propose a separate permit all together for Ig.Iguana and Tegu species. These amendments have not yet been approved.

Amendments that have been approved would allow the trapping and out of state sale only of Ig. Iguana and Tegu species but not any other currently listed conditional species. Breeding of captive animals would be illegal and breeders would be asked to sell stock animals within a set time frame.
